About Milk Bar
Milk Bar is all about nostalgia and ingenuity. Created by award-winning pastry chef Christina Tosi, the celebrated bakery whips up creative treats that blend the familiar with the modern, often fusing inviting textures with rich flavor.
There’s a good chance you may have spotted the name Milk Bar, whether it was on Netflix’s Chef’s Table: Pastry series, on Christina’s new show Bake Squad, or featured in The New York Times, BuzzFeed, or Bon Appetit.
If not, take one look at its Instagram page that has 825k followers and you’ll understand why the simple bakeshop has attracted so much attention. Christina’s imagination is the fuel behind the shop, which is now drawing in the droves with a sweet-smelling aroma that wafts from its five bakeries across the USA.
If you haven’t quite grasped the popularity of this brand or want to know more about how it came to be, this Milk Bar review has you covered. Ahead, we’ll dip into all the need-to-knows about the brand and its best-selling treats, throw in a variety of customer feedback, and churn up answers to critical FAQs. Let’s dig in.
Overview of Milk Bar
We first got to know Christina Tosi on the Netflix show Chef’s Table. Walking her audience through her creative process and how she came up with the home-run idea of cereal-milk ice cream, we came to understand her as a simple NYC girl obsessed with pushing the envelope when it came to baking.
Tosi opened up Milk Bar in NYC back in 2008 after working for a few years at two-time Michelin Star restaurant Momofuku Noodle Bar (NYC) as its pastry chef. After her cornflake-flavored ice cream and other imaginative concoctions brought restaurant patrons coming back for more, she decided to run with the idea.
Milk Bar is Momofuku Noodle Bar’s sister bakery, growing from one small NYC shop to having locations in LA, Las Vegas, DC, and Boston.

In the coming section, this Milk Bar review will take you through a selection of the brand’s cakes, cookies, pies, and ice cream, and we’ll even show you where you can nab a few recipes to make at home.
When you’re ready to order Milk Bar’s tasty treats, keep in mind that orders should be placed at least three days prior to your event. During the holiday season, you can reserve your baked goods up to 30 days in advance—make sure you and your fam don’t miss out!
Milk Bar Cake Review
Are we going too far by saying that cakes are the perfect treat? The combination of spongy cake with decadent icing plus textural toppings is a killer combo, and something Milk Bar crushes with its four triple-layer cake selections, plus one gluten-free alternative.
Each Milk Bar cake page is full of photos, giving you a bird’s eye, closeup, and inside view of each variety, ensuring that no sprinkle or dollop of frosting is hidden from your sight. You’ll also find a complete list of ingredients and common allergens.
Below, we’ll feature the brand’s three best-selling cakes we think are perfect for any time of year and occasion, despite what their names may allude to. Available in 6” and 10” sizes, the smaller serves 6-8 people while the larger serves 20-30—that’s if you decide to share.
Milk Bar Birthday Cake Review
Milk Bar says its Birthday Cake “tastes like childhood.” It was made to mimic the one you most likely had as a kid, mixing the comforting taste of rich vanilla with a flavor we can only describe as “multicolor sprinkles”—if you’ve ever had rainbow cake, you know what we mean.
The cake is a vanilla sponge bursting with rainbow sprinkles and layered with slabs of vanilla rainbow frosting and birthday cake crumbs to add a tasty crunch. Topped with more crumbs and sprinkles, this nostalgic cake takes us back. Pick up the Milk Bar Birthday Cake for $52-$120.
Milk Bar Chocolate Birthday Cake Review
Not a fan of vanilla? We get it—and so does Milk Bar. Sometimes chocolate is a non-negotiable, and the Chocolate Birthday Cake is here to please.
You’ll get the same rainbow-flecked frosting and crunchy birthday cake crumbs sandwiched in between layers of cake, only the cake itself is chocolate with chocolate chips mixed in. Celebrate in style with the scrumptious Milk Bar Chocolate Birthday Cake for $52-$120.
Milk Bar Peppermint Bark Cake Review
Dark and lovely, the Milk Bar Peppermint Bark Cake whips together fresh, minty flavors with rich, inviting chocolate. Perfect for the winter months, there’s something about this flavor that just screams snowfall and hot cocoa.
To get a satisfying level of flavor, the cake itself is soaked in a peppermint mixture, then layered together with peppermint frosting that’s topped with crunchy chocolate crumbs and fudge. On top, crushed candy canes are sprinkled for looks and added texture. Serve it at your next holiday party for $56-$125.
Milk Bar Cookies Review
The bakery serves up its Milk Bar cookies in tins of 6 or 12, assorted or in all of one tasty flavor. Each one is individually wrapped for freshness and for the sake of keeping the rest of the pack fresh, too.
This Milk Bar review will feature the brand’s two best-selling cookie tins, both stocked up with a variety of the brand’s most popular flavors.
Milk Bar Assorted Cookie Tin Review

Milk Bar Pie Review
With pies like these, two types are all you really need. The bakery’s online selection of pies includes its two crowd-pleasing varieties, the signature Milk Bar Pie and an inspired take on classic Pumpkin. The brand estimates that you’ll get about 8-10 slices per 10” pie.
Milk Bar Pie Review
Whipped up on a whim, Milk Bar Pie was born as an easy treat for a staff dinner. Of course, everyone went nuts over it and it’s been a bakery staple ever since. With an oat cookie base, this gooey custard pie has a simple ingredients list but packs on the flavor. Try one for your next pie craving for $46.
Milk Bar Pumpkin Pie Review
It’s called Pumpkin Pie, but that’s not really all it is. Blending two holiday favorites, this revolutionary pie takes all of the spicy, nutty flavors from pumpkin pie and stuffs it into the chewy, caramel-y goodness of pecan pie.
A mind-blowing sensation, Milk Bar Pumpkin Pie is perfect for all your fall and winter sugar cravings. Pick up one for $48.

Who Is Milk Bar For?
Milk Bar transforms nostalgic flavors in its homestyle bake goods into can’t-live-without-them combinations. They’re like the treats your grandma used to make, but they’re also modernized in a way that punches up the flavors.
To say Milk Bar treats are for those who want to indulge is a pretty blanketed statement, but to us, there’s eating a cookie, and then there’s eating a cookie. It’s the eye-closing, time-transporting difference that quality flavors and unique mixtures and textures bring that turns eating dessert into a truly remarkable indulgence.
Milk Bar Reviews: What Do Customers Think?
This brand has a pretty incredible reputation, but if you’re new to the bakery, you’re probably wondering what all the fuss is about. And because no Milk Bar review would be complete without hearing from customers, in this section, that’s exactly what we’ll do.
Our morsel of insight comes from MilkbBar.com where we scooped up a few ratings for some of the bakery’s top sellers. You’ll see those below:
- Birthday Cake: average of 4/5 stars from 10,299 reviews
- Peppermint Bark Cake: average of 4/5 stars from 421 reviews
- Ice Cream Sammie Party: average of 4/5 stars from 11 reviews
- Milk Bar Pie: average of 4/5 stars from 2,498 reviews
We took a peek inside the mixing bowl of reviews that came with the Milk Bar Pie because frankly, we’ve never had something like this before. Comments ranged from the pleasantly surprised to the ecstatic—the common thread between them? Go buy one now. Here’s a Milk Bar review that seems to sum things up:
“If you’ve had the Signature Milk Bar pie before then you can skip this review because you already know! If you have not yet…you should stop reading and go purchase one. It will be at your place on the day you select. The pie is insane.”
The pie of pies, also known as “Crack Pie,” truly lives up to its name. No one really went into details about its flavors, which really, we kind of appreciate as it would be a spoiler to an experience that we’re looking forward to having.
For our next tidbit of feedback, we checked out a Milk Bar review on Reviewed.com. We chose this site because it not only goes into what the Birthday Cake is like but the ordering and delivery process too. Of the delivery, it revealed:
“The cake arrived on exactly the day I chose, in the late morning. I opened the insulated bag that came inside the exterior cardboard box to find, first, a sample of the latest Milk Bar…All of the items arrived cool and perfectly intact.”
Three good signs here: timely delivery, free samples, flawless products. So what was the cake like? The reviewer gushed, “this isn’t your average cake…it’s deceivingly dense, and easily serves 8-12 people.” There are a lot of great things going for the Birthday Cake, and we’re coming to understand why it’s so popular.
For our last dollop of feedback, we decided to check out one of the brand’s items they carry on Amazon and at Whole Foods, the Milk Bar Soft Baked Cookie Packs. They’re not quite the same as the cookies you’d get from the bakery, but if you’re looking for an easier, more casual alternative, these are a great option.
Amazon showed an average rating of 3.4/5 stars from 1,293 shoppers for the cookies that broke down like this:
- 5 stars: 41%
- 4 stars: 13%
- 3 stars: 15%
- 2 stars: 12%
- 1 star: 19%
Though this score is lower than other bakery-fresh Milk Bar varieties, the majority of comments came from those who are over the moon with the taste and texture of these soft-baked cookies and had us getting ready to cue up an order. One read:
“I love these cookies!! They’re different (in size, texture, flavor) than the cookies you buy at Milk Bar + I find them to be the perfect at home / on the go treat! The size is perfect for when I want a little treat vs. indulging in a big cookie from MB.”
Overall, Milk Bar has outstanding quality across the board, but we kind of already knew that thanks to the gobs of press coverage, Netflix shows, and general craze about this bakery. Whether it’s picking up a pie in-store, ordering a triple-layer cake for delivery, or adding a few cookie packs to a late-night order, this brand is a must-try.
Is Milk Bar Worth It?
We’ll be honest here and tell you that even before this Milk Bar review, we were already kind of obsessed with the bakery. Loving Christina’s imagination and creativity in the kitchen, we believe in the power that baked goods have and have a soft spot for bakeries that do something different.
In Milk Bar’s case, the difference paid off, as the chain grew fast, rising out from a simple, nostalgic idea of cereal milk and blossoming into a household name.
So do we think it’s worth it? Well, in terms of flavors, quality, and concept, we believe a $52 6” cake is of great value, especially since most customers say it yields up to 12 pieces—although some scarf it down in a matter of hours. Is a delicious one-of-kind treat worth it to you? We guess that depends on how much you like treats.

Where to Buy Milk Bar
Milk Bar has bakeshops in major cities across the US including New York, LA, Las Vegas, Boston, and DC that you can visit anytime you want a swirly cone of your favorite frozen treat or fresh-baked cookie.
Since not all of us are lucky enough to live near a Milk Bar, delightfully, the brand ships to pretty much all US zip codes through MilkBar.com. And due to such popular demand, you can even find select items available at Amazon, Whole Foods, and Target, though these items differ from what you’d find in the bakeshop.
Who owns Milk Bar?
Christina Tosi is the creator and owner of Milk Bar. She got her start at the famed restaurant Momofuku Noodle Bar where she first created her celebrated cereal milk ice cream.
Does Milk Bar ship internationally?
The thing about cakes and such is that it’s kind of important they’re fresh and arrive in one piece. Once you add international shipping into the mix, the high caliber of service the brand is loved for can’t be guaranteed. For now, Milk Bar has opted to keep its deliveries to US locations only.
What is Milk Bar’s Shipping Policy?
Milk Bar ships to most zip codes in the US—be sure to check if the brand delivers to you before getting piling a load of deliciousness into your cart. If your zip code isn’t on the list, you can always pop into a shop or one of the brand’s retail partners.
For approved addresses, Milk Bar ships its order seven days a week and fees range from $15-$27 depending on your location and what day of the week you order (weekends tend to cost more). The ordering and delivery process goes something like this:
- You’ll pick out everything you want to order
- You can place your order as far as 30 days in advance
- Schedule the day for delivery and enter your zip code (the brand recommends choosing a date 1-2 days in advance if you have a time-sensitive event)
- Check out
For deliveries around Boston, LA, Las Vegas, New York, and Washington, you can get your Milk Bar order delivered through PostMates, Uber Eats, Caviar, or DoorDash.
What is Milk Bar’s Return Policy?
Milk Bar makes perishable treats which unfortunately aren’t returnable. Can you imagine all the things that could possibly go wrong with you trying to send a cake back through the mail? It just wouldn’t work, nor would it be sanitary.
The only situation that the company does issue refunds is if something was wrong with your order. In the rare case that this does happen, all you need to do is get in contact with the brand and let them know. From there, they may request photos of the affected order, and give you the option of a refund or replacement.
